What is Bouldering?

Bouldering is pretty simple- find a big rock and climb to the top! Where other forms of climbing use ropes and harness for protection on high walls, bouldering relies on crashpads, usually on ascents shorter than 12 feet. Indoors we use thick, continuous, engineered padding. If you’re just getting started with indoor climbing it doesn’t get simpler than bouldering- no special gear or technical training required! On your first visit we’ll go through everything you need to know.

First Time Climber F.A.Q.

When filling out waivers, it is a good idea to fill out for your whole family, even if only some will be participating on the day you have in mind. It’ll save you re-entering some of the information later.

How does bouldering indoors work?
If you’ve never been to a climbing gym before have no worries, we’ve got you covered. On your first visit we’ll go through a quick 5-minute orientation with you to cover basic safety, some simple rules, and the general setup of our gym. Our staff are always keen to answer any further questions you may have.

Do I need to call ahead and make a reservation?
No need to book a time, just stop by during open hours and we’ll get you going. Fill out your waiver in advance to speed things along.

Do I need special equipment?
The only gear you’ll need is a pair of shoes and athletic attire. We strongly recommend climbing shoes (available for rent and for sale), but you are welcome to climb in your own runners (snug fitting, clean indoor running shoes only)

Can I bring a group In?
If you plan on bringing a group of six or more in, you must schedule in advance. Click here for details on group bookings. Also feel free to email us at info@couleeclimbing.com or give us a call at
(403) 381-1540.

Who needs to sign a waiver?
Anyone allowed past our reception area is required to have a waiver, and waivers for minors must be completed by a parent or legal guardian. Click here to fill yours out now.

How long can I climb for?
Drop-ins should typically plan on about 60-90 minutes of climbing, although the only limit is your own endurance!

Who can boulder? Is there an age minimum?
:: Kids-
Our wall is set up for anyone 5 and above, although many 3 and 4 year-olds are great little climbers. Kids under 5 require arms-length supervision.

:: Adults- Bouldering is physically taxing and involves a fair bit of falling, but if you’re able to play other sports you’ll be able to boulder.

Anything I should do before my first visit?
Save a few minutes by signing our waiver online before you drop by. If you plan on bringing kids, check out our youth rules as well.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to call us at (403) 381-1540.

Do I need to supervise my children?
Supervising adults have an active role to play in helping kids/teens stick to a few simple rules. Click here for full details on rules and supervision ratios. Kids can quickly become a danger to themselves and others if they ignore rules or engage in horseplay
